What was your role or job in the band (literally or figuratively)?
I played keyboards in Klymaxx. I found the gig by answering an ad in LA's local freebie paper, the Recycler, back in early 1980. The only current member of the band who was there at the time was Bernadette, so I guess that makes me member number 2 or 3 (depending on who you ask).
What was the impact Klymaxx had in the 80's?
I'm not sure. I can say that I don't think we had enough of an impact on the 80's. There were other more successful girl bands that for a variety of reasons seemed to have more of an impact. That doesn't mean I agree that they SHOULD have. I do see remnants of what we did in some of the R&B/Pop acts that have followed us... EnVogue, TLC... there's pieces of Klymaxx in there if you look/listen hard enough. But the fact that we were women who knew how to jam on their axes... that's non-existent in mainstream music today. Frankly, I've always fantasized about blowing the Bangles AND the Go-Go's off the stage in an all-girl battle of the bands. Nothing personal, but even today, I'd bet we could do it.
What have you been up to in the past years?
After leaving the band in 1989, I spent some time trying my hand at independent song writing. It was not for me — and I don't think that had so much to do with talent, as my lack of skill as a businesswoman at the time (I've since improved in that category). Somewhere along the way, I found that I had a knack for working with computers. It all started back when I was in the band, before we were making any money. I was using an Atari computer to do music sequencing. I started taking it into the studio to lay tracks (the first tracks for I Miss You were done that way). Anyway, as more people started putting tracks down that way, the studio started calling me whenever they ran into problems and I'd help them out, in exchange for free studio time. When you're a broke musician, it's always nice to find a way to get free studio time! Anyway, that's pretty much what I've been doing since the Klymaxx days. I also went back to school and completed my BS in E-Business.
What do you expect from the reunion?
I'm not sure I fit into the same mold as the other girls. I don't know that I expect MUCH from the reunion, save the wonderful feelings of seeing everyone again, and having a chance to hang and play for a while. At the risk of sounding negative, the world of music has moved on from the 80's, and I'm not so sure I want to be a novelty act. BUT, if time proves my expectations to be way off the mark, I will be the first to eat my hat, so to speak.
How did you enjoy the comeback performance at the Roxy in Los Angeles?
I was surprised we sounded as good as we did. Several people even told us they thought we sounded better than before when we were touring all the time... Not so sure that's actually a good thing. I am still shaking my head in amazement over the whole thing. How lucky are WE?
